The iconic yet discreet Piccadilly address of the BAFTA played host to the Penfolds Collection 2018, along with a screening of ‘Innovators: The Rise of Australian Wine’ – a documentary collaboration with National Geographic to celebrate a century of Australian wine making.
The documentary is introduced by New Zealand actor turned winemaker Sam Neill, and features Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago as well as interviews with wine experts including Andrew Caillard MW. It is a triumphant account of how Australian wines have emerged as one of the most popular and critically acclaimed wine regions of the world from humble beginnings. I also found the narratives about how Grange was initially made in secret and the Penfolds re-corking clinics rather inspired.
